Neural Tube Defects

Neural Tube Defects

A neural tube defect (NTD) is a congenital malformation which occurs between the 3rd and 4th week (approximately 20 to 28 days) after conception, usually before a women even knows she is pregnant.

In baby development when there is no NTD, the neural tube folds and closes to form the brain and spinal cord. In the case of a NTD, the neural tube is unable to close completely, it is at this point that spina bifida can develop.
