SHARE Project

In 2018, Pobal launched a new initiative under the Dormant Accounts Fund for supporting Family Carers. SBHI applied and succeeded in securing significant funding for a programme we called the SHARE programme for supporting family carers [Spina Bifida. Hydrocephalus. Advocacy. Respect. Empowerment].

The aim of the funding is to provide training, support, and respite to the family carers of individuals with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus. We envisage that the training and information provision will help in upskilling and supporting family carers within the organisation.

Family carers, namely parents, siblings, extended family and friends are hugely important to individuals with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and to us as the organisation who supports them.

In order to roll out the SHARE programme we have recently recruited and employed a Training Officer to research, develop, and organise training and respite for family carers. The funding of this post is a key part of the DAF grant.

Our new Training Officer for SBHI is Talent Nyamakope.Talent will work very closely on the entire project with key staff members within SBHI such as the CEO, the Education Development Coordinator, the Respite and Recreations Manager, and the Family Support Team.

As part of the SHARE programme and funding application we outlined several key initiatives (see below).

  • Initiative 1: Patient handling and First Aid course
  • Initiative 2: Mindfulness sessions for parents and carers’
  • Initiative 3: Supporting families and carers’ resource development
  • Initiative 4: Saturday Series – series of information days for parents/carers’
  • Initiative 5: Peer support programme development
  • Initiative 6: Respite break weeks to be held in tandem with training weekends.
  • Initiative 7: Supporting the SBHI Family Break

We look forward to rollout out this innovative SHARE programme for Family Carers and we welcome Talent to the SBHI team and wish her all the best in her new role.
